Wisdom #2 – 1984

By His Holiness the Dalai Lama

 

Within the great seal of unshifting great bliss and total absence,

O united-together father and mother Cycles of Time,

And host of maidens, thirty and six, integrated with the real,

We request you please to arise here now as a force of the might of a compassionate heart.

 

As the smooth guiding light of a Ngawang – a mastery and wealth of enlightening speech – in the guise of a man,

When it comes to raising the victory banner of the spiritual treasures of the triumphant Losang – the excellent mind –

To be the all-around perfect standard for the essence of Thubten – what the Able One taught –

You fully are Tobjor – rich in strength – O sublime ever-vigilant master, we make you requests.

 

When you have been graciously bearing each day on the shoulders of your exceptional resolve

The yoke of bringing every-increasing help and happiness to the teachings and to us wandering beings,

How could it be that all of a sudden, in the sphere of rest,

You have set down your cornucopia baskets of enlightening forms as the source of meaningful benefit to us both?

 

And so we request that heralded by the fresh dawn of a re-dedication of your enlightening heart,

You make your advent supremely and quickly as a lotus-friend sun,

A corpus of supreme emanation, to dispel the bereavement of us wandering beings

Bound closely to you with sacred, deep faith.

 

Imbued with the clarifying brilliance of a burning lamp of extensive listening to the spiritual measures,

And enriched by a treasure of wish-granting gems of experience and insight

From pondering their meaning and building them up as good habits of the mind,

Please make your advent quickly as a holy upholder of the spiritual teachings, in the deepest sense.

 

Talented with the highest level of peerless erudition and skill as you already possess,

Beautiful with the all-around perfection of a tamed and involved deportment that is serenely stilled, under control and vigilant,

Steadfast with the excellence of an enlightening heart dedicated singly to the benefit of others,

Please make your advent quickly as a paragon of a spiritual being, a guiding light for us who wander.

 

For the sake of opening up, with an effulgence of myriad sharp rays of light of explanation, debate and composition,

In hundreds of directions, gardensful of lotuses of the Able One’s teachings

And dispelling the murky darkness from the minds of infinite wandering beings,

Please make your advent quickly as a great sun imparting the spiritual measures.

 

And through showing yourself in any other role or guise of emanation needed for taming, such as

Spiritual mentor and ritual chanter for the royal presence, chief lieutenant, master teacher of technical knowledge

Or patron of the spiritual teachings, we request you please to bring ever-increasing good avail

To wandering beings and the Snowland’s teachings.

 

By waves of inspiration from the ocean of the unfailing three that are supreme,

The never-changing nature of the two truths being the union of a pair, of those such as me,

May the aim of these prayers easily and quickly be filled.

 

Colophon: At the occasion when the supreme, precious Master Debate Partner Serkong Tsenshab Rinpoche, Ngawang Losang Thubten Tobjor, endowed with the all-around perfection of erudite skill, vigilance and excellence of heart, has demonstrated a passing into a state of rest, when not only have I been beseeched to compose a Request for a Quick Advent as a Supreme Emanation by Ganden Jangtze Monastery, the attendants of the Serkong household jointly, Serkong Khangtsen house, Tabo Monastery, Spiti, and its two geshes jointly, three villages of Spiti – Lari, Tabo and Poh – jointly, the village and monastery of Changpa, Kinnaur, jointly, and also by Jangchub Gyaltsan of Mar, Kham, and his wife Phurpu Dolma, but also been moved to join this with my own personal feelings of both fervent regard and bereavement for such a holy person with whom I have been linked with a deep spiritual connection for a very long time, I, the Buddhist monk Tenzin Gyatso, offer these prayers with a pure exceptional resolve.
