Gomo Tulku Arrives

Gomo Tulku, the 23rd incarnation in his lineage, and in whose former life was a teacher of Lama Thubten Yeshe as well as many FPMT students, arrived.

Rinpoche is almost eight years old and has become a good friend of Lama Osel and Kunkyen. They have visited the holy mountain of Heruka called Betapaur together.

Jesus’s Cave

On that mountain, Venerable Jampa Shenpen (the Spanish monk Jesus Revert) has been doing Heruka retreats of several months each for a few years. Jesus is planning to build a retreat house on the mountain with the help of Paco, Lama Osel’s father.

Enthronement

Gomo Tulku invited me to his enthronement on July 14th. There was a puja in the morning in the Common Assembly Hall of Sera at 5 a.m. and another at 10 a.m. at Sera Je.

Then there was the actual enthronement at 1:30 when everyone offered khata to Rinpoche on the throne. Afterwards, we were invited to a big lunch with many types of foods.

Teachers Take Break

Venerable Pemba Sherpa, Lama Osel’s attendant, is taking a well-deserved rest for two months in Hong Kong. Pemba is teaching texts on the Training of the Mind and the Stages of the Path to the students at the center there.

George, Lama’s teacher for subjects in English, is also taking a break. He will be giving some talks and courses in Malaysia and Singapore. Both monks are expected to return just after the week-long holiday at the end of the rainy season retreat which the monks at Sera observe.

Geshe Thubten Chonyi

Venerable Thubten Chonyi, who has been the manager of Osel Labrang for five years besides being one of the very best students in his class, will receive his geshe degree of the highest rank (Lharampa) this coming January.

Venerable Thubten Chonyi will be the first former Kopan monk to receive this highest rank of degrees and the second to receive the geshe degree. He plans to attend Gyume Tantric College afterwards for one year before deciding on what to do next.

Lama Osel Has Exams

Lama Osel took his exams in English, math and science at the end of June and did very well in all the tests–I don’t know who was more relieved. Much progress since last year.

Venerable Steve Carlier will continue to give Lama some classes in English for the next two months.
