Lungtog Rinpoche, 13, Chinese
This interview is just one of the many that took place for “A New Generation of Buddhist Young Practitioners,” the cover feature of Mandala July-August 1998:
Who are you the reincarnation of?
I am the reincarnation of Geshe Jampa Wangdu.
Do you remember your past life?
I don’t remember, but Lama Zopa Rinpoche and my mother told me about my past life. Lama Zopa Rinpoche said I am the reincarnation of Geshe Jampa Wangdu.
How old were you when you were recognized as a tulku?
I was recognized as a tulku at the age of two by Lama Zopa Rinpoche.
Did you start to learn about Dharma practice before you were recognized?
No, I didn’t. Since my family is practicing Dharma, I just follow them to recite some mantras, like om mani padme hung and some other mantras.
What sort of school do you go to in Hong Kong?
I went to St. Joseph Primary School until 11. I am now studying at the Chinese International School.
Are you receiving any sort of special Dharma education?
No, but I have been taking Tibetan lessons and doing some memorization and short prayers with Ven. Pemba since last year.
What do you feel is very important to contribute to society?
To have Dharma centers in every country. The people who run the centers should work together in perfect harmony to help Lama Zopa Rinpoche.
Are you a monk? Do you wear robes?
Yes, I am an ordained monk. I weak robes only on special occasions.
Do you often meet with Lama Zopa Rinpoche?
Not very often, maybe once a year. I meet Rinpoche whenever he comes to Hong Kong.
Does he give advice about your education?
Yes, but it is only between Rinpoche and me.
What sorts of things do you envision yourself doing in the future? Teaching? Meditating? Anything else, like business?
I can’t think of anything at the moment, but perhaps I will go to the monastery.
Do you feel it is important to practice Dharma starting at a young age?
Yes, because if you practice Dharma when you are young, it will be easier to learn.
What do you think is the most important aspect of Dharma to share with others?
I don’t know much about Dharma, but I think it is important to have good relationship with others, be kind and nice to others and help others.
Do you have any advice for people who know you in your past life, as well as this life? Or for those who read Mandala?
I will be back.
